Porsche scores a double podium in Australia’s ultimate performance car test 911 Turbo and Cayman GTS dominate MOTOR magazine’s Performance Car of the Year shootout

Australia. The Porsche 911 Turbo and Cayman GTS swept to a convincing 1-2 result in Australia’s only annual award dedicated exclusively to performance cars.

The Porsche sports car duo brushed aside performance car contenders from Germany, England, France, Japan and Australia to record an emphatic triumph.

The Stuttgart sports car specialist has now recorded 11 wins in the 19 years of MOTOR’s prestigious award; the 991-type 911 Turbo providing book ends to when the 993-type 911 Turbo won the inaugural Performance Car of The Year title in 1996.

MOTOR’s test is run extensively over three days with more than 1,000 kms of driving on road and track.

The 911 Turbo scored maximum points in all performance disciplines of acceleration, braking and lap time as well as maximum subjective scores from all five judges as the best performance car of 2014.

The newly released Cayman GTS finishing second is a major achievement given the mid-engined sports car gave away engine size, performance and power to more fancied rivals – underlying yet again the ethos of Porsche Intelligent Performance where balance and the sum of the parts are more critical than engine size and kilowatts alone.

“We expected the 911 Turbo to be a major contender and that proved to be the case,” said MOTOR editor Dylan Campbell. “But the real surprise was the Cayman GTS. It has the perfect blend of poise, power and feel to make it a very compelling sports car that punches well above its weight.”
