Twigg seals Elite Class title as Reid wins opening racesPorsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia, Round 8, Race 1 & 2, Saturday

Max Twigg has secured his second Elite Class championship victory at the final round of the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia championship at Sydney Olympic Park, while Jonny Reid was the star performer, claiming victory in the opening two races.

After gaining pole position, Reid held the lead of the opening race, holding off rival Craig Baird until the chequered flag from Steven Richards, Daniel Gaunt, Nick Foster, Alex Davison, Alexandre Imperatori, Andre Heimgartner and Shae Davies in ninth.

James Koundouris was the victor in the Elite Class battle in the opening race, taking the class win from Twigg, who managed to pass Michael Loccisano late in the race.

Loccisano finished third in the Elite Class from Marc Cini, Stephen Grove, Ray Angus, Theo Koundouris and Tony Bates.

Much like the opening race, Reid was again able to hold Baird at bay to claim victory in Race 2; the two race wins give Reid second in the points standings, now 48 points ahead of Davison with one race remaining for the season.

“I’m unbelievably happy. I’m delighted to have two victories so far with one race to go tomorrow. Baird was pushing me hard today; I’ve just got to keep my focus for tomorrow and see if we can get one more win. I’d be delighted for a clean sweep,” said Reid.

Gaunt finished third in the second race ahead of Richards, Davison, Foster and Imperatori in seventh.

James Koundouris was a repeat winner in the Elite Class, taking the Race 2 class win from Bates, Twigg, Cini, Theo Koundouris, Angus, Grove and Loccisano.

Twigg was delighted to have wrapped up the Elite Class championship, his second in two years.

“It’s a great feeling to get back-to-back Elite Class wins. As soon as I crossed the line and won the title all I could think about was next year. We’re focussed on that now,” said Twigg.

“I didn’t expect to win two Elite Class championships in a row. James is a consistent driver and Tony Bates and Shane Smollen were drivers who were always going to be very quick this season. I wasn’t convinced that I could win it a second time, but I have, and I’m rapt about it.”

Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia will hold its final race of the season on Sunday at 10:40am.
