Craig Baird: 10-time Porsche championCraig Baird seals 2012 Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia championship

Craig Baird, the ‘world’s most successful Porsche Cup driver’, has claimed his 10th Porsche one-make championship victory this weekend in the Gold Coast.

With one round remaining in the 2012 Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia championship, the 42-year-old New Zealander gained an unassailable lead in the standings, adding to his already impressive record aboard the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.

Placing third for the round at his home Carrera Cup Australia round, including two race wins, Baird secured the title with a 180-point lead entering the final round of the season at Sydney Olympic Park in December.

In 2012, Baird accrued 10 Carrera Cup Australia race victories, three round wins and seven podium finishes from seven rounds.

In addition to Baird’s 10 Carrera Cup Australia race wins in 2012, he was also victorious at the Porsche SC Global Carrera Cup Asia – Singapore 2012 event, increasing his total number of Porsche one-make series race victories to 125 – an ever increasing record.

“I’d go as far as to say that this is the best championship win – it’s number 10, I’d be surprised if anyone gets close to that in the future,” said Baird.

“There were a solid five or six drivers that were capable of winning the championship at the beginning of this season and we’ve won 10 out of 21 races with more poles than anyone else.

“Everyone has had their good meeting and bad meeting, but I think the important thing is that we haven’t finished off the podium this year and the worst round result we’ve had is a third. At the end of the day, you’d say that we deserved the championship; it’s not through anyone else’s misfortune.

“My guys have just done a sensational job along with the great group of sponsors; everyone has done a great job and it’s been a really enjoyable year.

“I came here never thinking that I’ll go have a beer Sunday night on the Gold Coast with the championship wrapped up, so that’s a massive bonus.”

In 2011, Baird was named the ‘world’s most successful Porsche Cup driver’ by Porsche in Germany, who awarded him the guest drive in the inaugural Porsche Carrera World Cup at Nurburgring-Nordschleife, Germany.

Baird now has 48 Carrera Cup Australia race wins, 17 Carrera Cup Australia round wins and 32 Carrera Cup Australia round podiums.

Baird now has a total of 27 national championship victories.
